Frequently Asked Questions
What counts as "tomato paste" here?
The thick, concentrated paste sold in a tube or small can - not the runnier tomato puree or passata.
Does it have to have cream? I'm dairy intolerant.
No - readers report coconut cream works well as a swap and adds a nice coconut flavour.

I used coconut cream, it turned just as well, and had a delicious coconut flavour.
Any one know the calories of this recipe, or how many carbs etc. I make it all the time, it’s delicious!
made last night. yummo. I used chicken nibble pieces, added potato & mixed vege. my hubby does not like chilli – but he didn’t notice at all & took some for his lunch today 🙂
I wonder does it taste like the butter chicken from NZ food court?
No. It tastes 2000x better as it isn’t full of sugar, nor watered down spice-wise.
So easy and yummy thanks a lot
Great recipe..used only 2 breasts.and 300 mls cream..also added 1 tsp fenugreek. ….not sure if it added any flavor though
I didn’t have any cream so used 300mls of sour cream and a can of tinned tomatoes, was delicious.
A good recipe I left out the chilli as family not like it to hot, but spices give it a great taste nice cheers.
How many points in WW if you use yogurt instead of cream
May I please ask what you class as tomato paste? Not being smart but I know lots of ppl that claim tomato paste as lots of different things…?
I purchase this from the supermarket – and its referred to on the lable as ‘tomato paste’. Its definately a paste that requires spoon to get it out of the container. And quite an intense tomato flavour. Not liquid like ‘tomato puree’.
Yum love this recipe I use it all the time
Yum best butter chicken recipe ever thank you my family love it I make it all the time because it fast and very easy
this is so nice
There seems to be a lot of butter in this dish so I reduced it quite a bit.
Well, I guess they could have called it Olivani Chicken. What to Indian cooks know?
