Mama Lisa's Homemade Chutney


I developed this recipe myself,based on others I found in some old school fundraising cookbooks from the 1930's and '40's.
The good thing about it for me is that it makes use of produce from our own trees and gardens(i.e. the apples,lemons,onions and chillies are all homegrown) so it doesn't cost alot to make.
I find the spices work well with the fruit and each other.

Ingredients

  • 4lb apples
  • 1lb onions
  • 1lb sultanas
  • 1qt vinegar
  • 1tsp ground cloves
  • 2tsp ground ginger
  • 1 or 2 dried whole chillies
  • 4 lemons - juice and finely grated rind
  • 2lb brown sugar
  • salt to taste

Directions

  1. Put all ingredients into a large pot.
  2. Bring to the boil and simmer for 2 hours or until thck.
  3. Remove chillies.
  4. Spoon into hot sterilised jars and seal.
Amount Cooking Time Prep Time
4-6 jars 2 hours an hour or so
